Martin's Installation of Hardwood

Before Installation
Monte Rosa Hardwood by Shaw

Before your installation, our professional estimator will come to your home and determine how much hardwood or laminate you will need for your job. If you have a preference on which direction you would like your flooring to run, this is the time to let us know.

In most cases, the rooms that are being installed will need to be completely empty. For a fee we can move your furniture however, we ask that all small items and anything breakable are removed from on top and inside of the furniture. We also ask that all linens be removed from beds and all wiring detached from electronics.

Some homeowners prefer to remove the old flooring themselves in order to save some money. Please ask what exactly needs to be removed and what can be left there. For example, we prefer that doorway seams to other rooms be cut a couple of inches long so we can cut them to the exact spot needed.

The removal of some flooring materials can be dusty and noisy at times. Every effort will be made to keep this to a minimum however, some customers prefer to cover doorways ahead of time in order to keep dust confined to the areas being replaced.

There are also times when the subfloor may need to be repaired. Whenever possible, this should be done before the installation day. Minor repairs can be done by our installers, major repairs will need to be done by a contractor. There will be an additional cost if this is not known before estimates are given and it is not discovered until we remove the old flooring. There are contractors that we work with on a regular basis and can recommend if needed.

With hard surface flooring, toilets and pedestal sinks will need to be removed and reinstalled after the flooring is installed in bathrooms. If you do not have a plumber, we can recommend one or contact one to have this done.

Most hardwoods and laminates require a 24 to 48 hour acclimation period. We will arrange to deliver your floor ahead of time and will need to store the materials in or as close to the room being installed as possible.

During Installation

During your installation, the wood baseboard will need to be removed and renailed or shoe molding installed after completion. Some homeowners prefer to do this themselves to keep the cost down. We will also need to undercut door jams in order to slide the flooring under, this will be noisy and can sometimes make some dust. For nail down installations, you should also expect a moderate amount of noise.

After your installation is complete, there may be some leftover hardwood or laminate, it’s a good idea to keep this just in case you ever need to do a repair.

If your doors do not clear your new hardwood or laminate, our installers can trim the bottom for a small fee or they can leave them off if you prefer to cut them yourself.

We recommend reading the warranty and care packet provided with your invoice. Please pay close attention to the maintenance. We stock floor cleaning kits and felt pads that are designed for your floor. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us!
